Welcome

The NSW Metropolitan Public Libraries Association (NSW MPLA) is the peak body that represents the interests and development of public libraries in metropolitan New South Wales.

Member Councils provide library services to 43 Local Government Areas bounded by Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, the Blue Mountains and Wollongong. These libraries serve a population of 4.9 million, 22% of Australia’s population and 68% of the state's population. By 2036 it is projected that the region's population will have increased by 1.7 million.

Public libraries in New South Wales:

  • Deliver an economic benefit of $4 for every dollar invested
  • Lend over 50.5 million items and receive 37 million visits annually
  • Have an annual expenditure of nearly $330 million, over 90% of which is provided by Local Government Councils and the remainder is provided by the State Government.

New South Wales metropolitan public libraries enable access to New South Wales and Australian Government information and provide a wide range of social, cultural, educational and recreational services and programs to diverse, multicultural communities.
